CAMP Stalker Review
The Stalker is CAMP's answer to the question every first-time buyer asks: how cheap can a crampon get before it stops being safe. The answer, in this case, is cheaper than most people expect. Twelve steel points in a conventional layout, ~980 g a pair, anti-balling plates fitted as standard, and all three binding types available — strap-on, semi-automatic and automatic. That is the same functional spec sheet as crampons costing considerably more.
What you give up is refinement, not security. The stampings are less finely finished, the straps are stiffer in the cold, and the adjustment hardware takes a firmer hand than Petzl's. None of that changes what happens when you put the points into névé at 40°.
It is the crampon we point people toward when the budget is genuinely tight and the alternative would be an unbranded set from a marketplace listing. That comparison, rather than the comparison with a Vasak, is the one that matters.

What the low price actually costs you
Start with what it does not cost you. The steel is heat-treated carbon steel of the same broad class every mainstream brand uses. The point layout is the well-proven 12-point pattern: two forward-angled front points, two secondary points behind them, then six under the ball, arch and heel of the boot. The anti-balling plates are real plates, moulded and fitted, not an afterthought. What the price does cost you shows up in the details you notice on the twentieth outing rather than the first.
Finish. Edges on the stamped frame are cut rather than tumbled smooth. Nothing sharp enough to cut a glove, but you can feel the difference running a thumb along a Stalker and a Vasak side by side. Paint and coating wear off faster, which means surface rust appears sooner if you store them damp.
Straps and buckles. The webbing is thicker and less supple than premium alternatives. In deep cold it stiffens noticeably, and threading a frozen strap through a buckle with mitts on is the moment you understand why people pay more. Budget an extra minute at every transition.
Adjustment feel. The linking bar slides and locks without tools, but the detents are firmer and the fit range is coarser. Getting the crampon dialled to a specific boot can leave you choosing between a hole that is slightly too long and one slightly too short. Once set, it stays set — but set it carefully at home, not in a car park in the dark.
Point wear. The frame is stamped and heat-treated rather than hot-forged the way Grivel's classics are. On snow and ice that difference is invisible. On rocky approaches and mixed ground it is not: expect to file the front points a little sooner than you would on a hot-forged Grivel. The upside is that the softer steel takes a hand file quickly.
On snow, glacier and moderate ice
Underfoot the Stalker behaves like a 12-point crampon should, which is to say unremarkably. Ten downward points spread across the sole means weight lands on several points at once when you flat-foot, so the platform feels stable across the 20–45° band where most mountaineering time is spent. On firm névé the whole sole engages. On breakable crust the points penetrate enough to catch before the crust collapses under you.
The front points are horizontal and angled forward and slightly down. They kick a supportive step in snow and soft alpine ice and they do not shear sideways when you traverse flat-footed. On a short water-ice step they work, in the way horizontal points always work: more surface area, more displaced ice per kick, more effort. We would put the honest ceiling at short steps to roughly 55–60°, climbed in balance.
Snow shedding is competent rather than excellent. Wet spring snow balls up under any crampon, and the Stalker's plates clear with a firm tap of an axe shaft rather than shedding on their own the way the best plates do. On a warm afternoon on a south-facing slope, check under your feet every few minutes regardless of what you are wearing. Balling is a leading cause of unexpected slips.
A crampon does not make steep ground safe. Above roughly 30°, a slip becomes a slide, and stopping one takes an ice axe plus practised self-arrest — and honest judgment about what lies below the slope. If your winter plans are icy trails rather than mountain faces, you want microspikes, not this or any other 12-point crampon.
Choosing the right binding version
CAMP sells the Stalker in three fittings, and picking correctly matters more than picking the model.
Universal is the full strap-on (C1). Plastic toe and heel cradles joined by webbing, no welts required. This is the version for stiff B1 mountaineering boots and genuinely rigid backpacking boots. It is also the version most people buying a first pair should look at, because most people's first winter boots have no welts. It is slower to fit and marginally less precise, but it works on the widest range of footwear.
Semi-Automatic swaps the heel cradle for a lever and needs a heel welt (C2, B2 boots). Faster on and off with cold hands, and it holds adjustment better through a season because there is one fewer strap to creep.
Automatic adds a wire toe bail and needs welts at both toe and heel (C3, B3 boots). Fastest of the three, most precise, and completely unsuitable for anything without a proper toe welt.
If you are not sure which category your boots fall into, do not guess. Hold the boot at heel and toe and try to twist it: noticeable flex means no crampon belongs on it at all. Set front-point projection so the points stand roughly 1.5–2 cm proud of the boot toe, then twist the boot by hand. If the crampon rocks or rotates, the bar length or the cradle position is wrong. That check takes ten seconds and prevents the failure that actually hurts people: a crampon coming loose mid-slope.

Buy it if you are assembling a first winter kit and the crampon budget is what is left after boots. Buy it if you need a second pair to lend to partners, keep in a course kit or leave in a hut bag. Buy it if you climb a handful of snow routes a year and cannot justify spending more on gear that spends ten months in a cupboard. Buy the Universal version if your boots have no welts, Semi-Automatic if they have a heel welt, Automatic only if they have both.

Who should not buy it
Ice climbers. If your winter is spent on vertical waterfall ice, horizontal front points will make you work far harder than you need to. Look at a modular mono/dual crampon from the ice climbing roundup instead.

Winter trail hikers in flexible boots. This is the important one. A 12-point crampon on a soft-soled boot is worse than useless: the frame flexes, points lever out, straps loosen and the whole assembly becomes a trip hazard on ground it was never meant for. Icy trails and packed snow call for microspikes. Crampons start where the slope gets steep enough that a fall runs out badly.

FAQ
Is a budget crampon actually safe?
From a certified manufacturer, yes. The Stalker meets the same European standard as premium models, and the steel, point geometry and anti-balling plates all do their job. The savings come out of finish, hardware quality and weight. Unbranded crampons with no certification are a different matter entirely — avoid them.
Stalker or Grivel G10?
The G10 is a 10-point with only rudimentary front points, aimed at glacier walking. The Stalker is a full 12-point and will do more, including short ice steps. If you will never front-point, the G10 walks slightly more comfortably. If there is any chance you will, take the Stalker.
Will these fit my winter hiking boots?
Only if the boots are stiff. Twist the boot in your hands: if the sole flexes appreciably, no crampon belongs on it. Genuinely rigid boots without welts take the Universal version. Soft boots and trail shoes need traction devices, not crampons.
Do I need to buy anti-balling plates separately?
No, they come fitted front and rear. Replace them when they crack — plates are safety equipment on wet spring snow, and they are cheap compared to the consequence of a foot skating out.
