Kahtoola is a traction specialist, not a crampon manufacturer. The company built the category the rest of the industry now copies — a stretchy elastomer harness that pulls over any shoe, with hardware underneath — and it has spent twenty years refining that one idea rather than chasing alpine hardware. There is no Kahtoola for glacier travel, no Kahtoola for waterfall ice, and the brand does not pretend otherwise.

What Kahtoola does have is a ladder. Each rung adds spike length and takes away comfort, and the rungs are separated by millimetres that matter enormously underfoot. The decoder: spike length is the whole specification

Ignore model names for a moment and read the middle column of that table. Traction devices work by penetrating a surface, and how far a point reaches determines what it can reach into.

1–3 mm (NANOspikes, EXOspikes). Carbide tips scratch rather than penetrate. They bite frozen dirt, gravel, rime-glazed rock and hard-packed snow, and they are comfortable enough on bare pavement that you stop noticing them. On thick smooth ice there is very little engagement, so they feel adequate rather than secure.

~10.4 mm (MICROspikes). Long enough to punch through a polished crust into the firmer material underneath, short enough to walk a connecting stretch of road without feeling like stilts. ~19–20 mm (K10, KTS). Crampon-length points on a hinged frame that bends with a soft boot. Are Kahtoola devices actually crampons?

Only the K10 and KTS come close, and even they are flexible hiking crampons: hinged frames, strap bindings, no boot welts. MICROspikes, EXOspikes and NANOspikes are traction devices with short spikes or studs. For glaciers, alpine faces or anything needing front points, buy stiff boots and a 12-point steel crampon.
