How to Put On Crampons
Almost every crampon that comes off in the mountains was fitted badly, not built badly. It usually happens in the worst possible place: halfway up a slope, in wind, with cold hands, on a crampon that was never adjusted to the boot it is now sitting on.
The fix is a routine. Adjust at home, stop somewhere sensible, clear the boot, fit the binding in the correct order, test it, and look at both feet before you move. This page walks through that routine for all three binding systems.
Putting crampons on correctly is a skill you can learn from a page. Using them on consequential terrain is not. Steep snow and ice demand ice-axe competence, practised self-arrest, and judgment built with a partner or an instructor. The sequence at a glance
- Adjust and test-fit at home, in daylight, with the boots you will wear.
- Stop on flat, safe ground before you need the crampons.
- Anchor your pack, poles and axe so nothing can slide away.
- Knock the snow and ice out of the boot sole and welts.
- Seat the boot in the crampon — toe first, every time.
- Close the binding: strap routing, heel lever, or toe bail plus heel lever.
- Tug-test the crampon in three directions.
- Tuck every strap tail.
- Check both feet, then stand up and take three deliberate steps.
Step 1: Fit and adjust them at home
A crampon that has to be adjusted on the hill will be adjusted badly. Do it at the kitchen table: set the linking bar so the boot presses in with firm hand pressure and no fore-aft slop, check front-point projection, set heel-lever height, and trim the straps. Mark the linking-bar hole with a paint pen so you can reset it after someone borrows them.

Step 2: Stop somewhere flat and safe
Choose the spot deliberately, and choose it early. You want level ground, out of rockfall and out of the wind, wide enough to sit or kneel without your gear sliding. The temptation is always to push on until the snow gets firm enough to justify stopping — by which point you are balanced on the very slope you did not want to fall down.
Put the pack down on its back, plant the axe, and stow anything loose — a mitten that starts sliding on hard snow is gone. If there is no flat ground, face into the slope and kick a proper platform for both feet and your pack first. Judging when terrain has crossed the line is its own skill: when do you need crampons.
Step 3: Clear the boot soles
This is the step people skip, and it causes more heel-lever failures than anything else. Snow packed into the tread compresses under body weight, the boot settles a few millimetres deeper into the crampon, and suddenly the strap is loose or the lever pops.
Bang the sole against the axe shaft or the other boot until the tread is clear. On automatic and semi-automatic setups, run a finger or the axe pick through the toe and heel welt grooves — ice in the welt stops the bail seating fully, and a bail that is only half-seated feels tight and is not.
Step 4: Fit strap-on crampons in the right order
Strap-on (C1) bindings hold by tension alone, so the order matters more than on any other system.
- Set the crampon on flat ground with the buckle to the outside of the foot — modern crampons are left and right specific, and a mirrored pair fits deceptively well and fails on edges.
- Slide the toe into the front cradle first, then drop the heel in. The boot should sit centred, with even daylight either side.
- Pull the heel cradle up snug against the boot before touching the strap.
- Route the strap through the buckle exactly as the manufacturer shows — the crossing patterns differ by brand, and a strap threaded through the wrong ring will hold at first and creep loose within an hour.
- Tension it firm, not brutal. If your toes go cold or numb, the strap is too tight and you have lost more than you gained.
If you find yourself cranking the strap to remove movement, stop: slop is a linking-bar length problem, not a strap problem. Go back to step 1. More on how the three systems differ: crampon binding types.
Step 5: Fit semi-automatic crampons and set heel lever tension
Semi-automatic (C2) bindings put the boot toe in a plastic basket and lock the back with a tensioned heel lever.
Drop the toe into the basket, push the boot forward and down, then swing the heel lever up against the heel welt and close it with your thumb. It should take firm, deliberate thumb pressure — enough that you notice it. If the lever snaps shut with a fingertip, tension is too low; wind the adjustment screw to shorten the lever until closing takes real effort. A closed lever should stand up against the back of the boot, not lie flat or gape.
Then fasten the ankle strap. On a semi-auto it is a backup, not the primary attachment, but it is the reason a popped lever means a slow shuffle to safe ground rather than a lost crampon.
Step 6: Fit automatic crampons on the welts
Automatic (C3) bindings use a wire toe bail plus the same heel lever, and they are the most secure system when they are seated properly and the least forgiving when they are not.
Hook the bail into the toe welt groove and check it sits in the groove along its whole width, not perched on the rand above it. Push the boot back into the crampon, close the heel lever, and then look at the toe again: a bail that jumps out of the groove as the heel closes is the classic failure, and it is invisible from a standing position. Fasten the ankle strap over the lever so a released lever cannot shed the crampon.
Tap the frame with a knuckle. A properly seated automatic crampon sounds and feels like part of the boot, with no rattle.
Step 7: Do the tug test
Grab the crampon frame with both hands and pull it forward, backward and side to side, hard. Then twist. Nothing should move relative to the boot — not a millimetre of rock, not a rotation.
Movement now becomes leverage later, and leverage on a front point at full body weight is how frames crack and bindings release. If the crampon shifts, take it off and fix the cause: bar length first, cradle position second, lever tension third. Strap tension is last on that list, not first.
Step 8: Tuck the strap tails
Loose strap ends are a trip hazard aimed at your own front points. Trim them at home to roughly a hand's width past the buckle, then on the hill fold the tail back under the tensioned part of the strap or wrap it around the ankle. Some crampons have a keeper loop; use it.
Do the same audit for anything else that can catch: gaiter straps, trailing pant cuffs, an untied lace bow. Every one of them is something a point can hook when you cross your feet.
Step 9: Run the pre-move check
Stand up and look down at both feet before you take a step. Then take three deliberate steps and check again — bindings settle in the first few metres, and the second check catches what the first missed.

FAQ
Should I put crampons on sitting down or standing up?
Sitting or kneeling on flat ground, whenever you have the option — you can see both welts, use both hands, and nothing depends on your balance. Standing is a skill worth practising for the times you have no choice, but it is not the default.
How tight should the ankle strap be?
Firm enough that the crampon cannot rotate off a released lever, loose enough that your toes stay warm. Cold feet on a climb are frequently a strap-tension problem rather than a sock problem.
My heel lever keeps popping open. What is wrong?
Three usual causes, in order: lever tension set too low for the welt depth, snow or ice packed in the welt, or a boot and crampon pairing that was never right. Adjust the screw first, clear the welt second, and if it still releases, check the compatibility ratings for that boot.
Can I put crampons on with gloves on?
You should be able to, and it is worth practising at home with thick gloves. If a binding can only be closed barehanded, either the tension is set wrong or the model is a poor match for cold-weather use.
