How to Sharpen Crampons

Most crampons that get sharpened did not need it. A hand file removes steel permanently, and steel removed on a bench is grip you will not have in five seasons. The two most common ways to ruin a good crampon are a power tool and an over-enthusiastic owner with a new file.

Sharpening is still a real skill worth having. Front points that have gone rounded on rock genuinely bite worse on hard ice, and restoring them takes ten minutes with the right file and the right restraint. Here is the process, and — as importantly — the test for whether you should start at all.

Sharp points do not make anyone competent on steep ground, and a well-maintained crampon is still only one part of a system that includes stiff boots, an ice axe, practised self-arrest and instruction. Step 1: Decide whether it actually needs sharpening

Sharpen on evidence, not on a calendar. The honest tests:

  • The tip. Run a thumbnail across the front-point tip. A serviceable point catches; a rounded, polished dome slides.
  • The bite. On firm ice, a good front point sets with one committed kick. If you are kicking three times and skating, that is a dullness signal.
  • The visible wear. Look for a blunted tip, a rolled-over edge from rock, or a burr you can catch a fingertip on.

Surface rust is not dullness. Rust wipes and dries off; it does not justify filing. That is a cleaning and storage question — see crampon care and maintenance.

Step 2: Choose a hand file, never a power tool

A flat hand file is the entire tool list. A mill bastard file — the standard single-cut flat file, in a size you can control with two hands — removes steel at a sensible rate, and a finer flat file works well for light touch-ups on technical points. Files cut on the push stroke only and blunt quickly if you drag them back under pressure. A handle is worth fitting — the tang is sharp and your hand will slip at some point. More of the small kit worth owning is in best crampon accessories.

Never use a bench grinder, angle grinder, Dremel or belt sander. Crampon points are heat-treated, and a grinder puts enough heat into a thin point in seconds to draw the temper out of it. The result looks sharp and is soft — it will roll or snap under load, and the damage is invisible until the point fails. If the tip changes colour, the steel is already ruined. Hand files do not generate that heat, which is the whole reason they are the correct tool.

Step 3: Secure the crampon

Clamp the crampon in a vice with soft or padded jaws so you do not gouge the frame, positioned so the point you are working stands proud and the file has a clear run.

Both hands go on the file: one on the handle, one flattening the tip. Filing a crampon held in one hand and waved in the air produces uneven bevels and, sooner or later, a cut.

Step 4: File along the original bevel

Every crampon point leaves the factory with a bevel — the flat ground faces that meet at the edge. Your job is to restore that bevel, not to invent one. Lay the file flat against the existing face, feel it seat across the whole surface, and follow that angle for every stroke.

Look at the point from the side before you start, then check every few strokes that fresh metal is appearing evenly across the whole face rather than only near the tip. If you are cutting a new, narrower angle, you are thinning the point and weakening it.

Step 5: Work from the base toward the tip

Push the file from the base of the point outward toward the tip, then lift it clear and return. Do not saw back and forth: the back-drag rounds the edge you just cut and wears the file.

Use light, even pressure and count your strokes so both matching points get the same treatment. A few strokes per face is usually enough for a touch-up. If a point needs twenty strokes to come back, ask whether it is dull or whether it is finished — see step 11.

Step 6: Keep the original point profile

Sharpen in the shape the manufacturer forged. Do not taper a horizontal front point into a needle, do not round a square-shouldered secondary point, and do not try to lengthen anything. Point geometry is designed around how the crampon loads on ice and snow, and a hand-carved profile changes that in ways that are hard to predict and easy to regret.

Step 7: Sharpen the front points

Front points do the most work on hard ice and take the most abuse from rock, so they are usually the only points that need attention. Dress the two side bevels, then lightly clean the underside face, keeping every stroke parallel to the original grind.

Keep the pair matched. If one front point is visibly shorter than the other after a rock strike, file the longer one back only as far as needed to bring them close — do not chase a perfect match, because you are trading length for symmetry and length is finite. Step 8: Sharpen the secondary points

The secondary points sit under the ball of the foot and take load whenever you drop your heel while front-pointing. They matter more than most people credit, and they need much less filing than the front points.

A light dressing to remove rolling and restore a defined tip is enough. Their job is to stop the boot rotating and to share load, not to cut. Over-filing them shortens them relative to the front points and changes how the crampon sits on ice.

Step 9: Leave the bottom points nearly alone

The downward points under the sole work by penetration into snow, and they penetrate because your body weight is behind them, not because they have an edge. Filing them sharp achieves nothing and costs you length that you will want in five years.

Step 10: Deburr, clean and dry

Filing raises a burr on the far side of the cut. Take it off with a single very light pass in the opposite direction or a light stroke of the fine file, then wipe the whole crampon down to remove steel dust — fine filings hold moisture against the frame and start rust.

Step 11: Know when a crampon is worn out, not dull

A file cannot fix a crampon that has reached the end of its service life, and continuing to sharpen one is how people end up standing on a frame that is about to fail.

Straps and plates are consumable and cheap to replace. Frames and points are not repairable. If you have reached the point of replacing a frame, start from the current best crampons rather than nursing a tired pair through another winter.

How often should I sharpen my crampons?

When they stop biting, not on a schedule. Crampons used on snow and glacier travel can go seasons between touch-ups. Crampons used on mixed ground with a lot of rock may want a light dressing once or twice a winter. Filing every trip simply shortens their life.

Can I sharpen aluminum crampons?

Lightly, and rarely. Alloy points wear fast in normal use, and every stroke of the file removes material a steel point would have kept. If your aluminum points are dull enough to worry you, that is usually a sign they are being used on ground that calls for steel.

Why is a bench grinder such a problem if I go slowly?

Thin steel heats up faster than you can feel through a glove, and the temper is drawn long before anything glows. A point that has been overheated stays the right shape and loses its hardness, so it rolls or snaps under load with no warning. There is no reliable way to check for it afterward, which is why the tool is simply off the table.

Do microspikes need sharpening?

No. Their spikes are short, hardened and designed to wear out as a unit, and filing them removes the little length they have. When they stop gripping, replace them.
