When aluminum is a mistake

The rule. Aluminum crampons are for snow you expect, at a time you chose, on ground you have seen. If there is a realistic chance of hard ice, of rock, or of a slip that would not stop, take steel. This is a safety limit, not a performance preference.

Hard water ice and alpine ice. Alloy points do not penetrate hard ice; they skate across it and then deform. The failure is sudden rather than gradual — a foot that was holding stops holding, with no warning underfoot. There is no technique that compensates. On ice, steel is a requirement.

Rock and mixed ground. Steel points wear over years. Aluminum points wear over hours of contact with stone. A single rocky traverse rounds them measurably; two or three visibly shorten the front points.
