Hillsound Trail Crampon Review
The Hillsound Trail Crampon is what you buy when microspikes are not quite enough. Eleven carbon-steel spikes per foot at roughly 17 mm, mounted on steel plates rather than dangling off free chain, plus a velcro over-strap that stops the harness rotating under load. It is heavier and more aggressive than a Kahtoola MICROspike, and on steep, hard, north-facing trail ice that difference is obvious within about ten steps.
It is not the right answer for everyone. If most of your winter walking is rolling trail, packed snow and the occasional icy patch, the extra spike length is weight and clatter you do not need. If your terrain steepens to the point where a slip would actually run out, no trail crampon is enough. Both of those cases get proper answers below.

On the trail: what the extra 7 mm buys
Spike length sounds like a trivial spec until you walk a frozen, refrozen, boot-polished trail on a 25-degree slope. A ~10.4 mm microspike sits on that surface and skates a little before it sets. A ~17 mm spike punches through the polished crust into the softer layer underneath and stops. On the way down, that is the difference between placing every step deliberately and simply walking.
The spike layout helps as much as the length. Hillsound puts the spikes on two steel plates — one under the forefoot, one under the heel — so each spike has a rigid base to push against instead of pivoting on a chain link. Weight transfers into the ice rather than into flex. Edging across a sidehill, the forefoot plate keeps the outer spikes engaged instead of letting the array roll under your arch.
The velcro strap over the instep is the other real feature. Microspike-style harnesses migrate: on steep descents, on repeated toe-off, and especially on smooth-uppered boots, the elastomer creeps until the spikes are no longer centred under the sole. The strap ends that. Once it is cinched, the chassis stays put for the day. It also gives you a second chance if the harness ever tears — you keep the crampon on your foot long enough to get somewhere safe.
Where the Hillsound feels like more than you want is pavement and mixed ground. Long spikes on bare rock or asphalt are loud, unstable and dull the points. These two are cross-shopped more than any other pair in the category, and the honest answer is that they are built for slightly different slopes.

MICROspikes win on weight, packability and comfort over long mixed days. The Hillsound wins on outright bite and security when the trail tilts. If you already own MICROspikes and keep wishing for more purchase on steep icy descents, the Hillsound is a genuine upgrade rather than a sidegrade. Sizing: the thing people get wrong
Sizing is the number one source of complaints with every device in this category, and it is almost always fixable before you buy.
Size against the boot you will actually wear, not your street shoe size. Insulated winter boots run a full size larger in outsole footprint than the same nominal size in a trail runner. Hillsound's chart is keyed to shoe size, so use the number on the boot box and check the overlap band at the top of each size range.
If you fall between sizes, go up if you will use them on bulky insulated boots, and down if you will use them on runners or low hikers. A slightly taut harness is a secure harness; a loose one migrates and the velcro strap ends up doing work it was not designed to do alone. If the elastomer is so tight you cannot seat the heel cup without a fight in the cold, you have gone a size too small — that is the version of the mistake that actually leaves you sitting in the snow at the trailhead.
Fit check once they are on: spikes centred under the sole, heel cup fully seated behind the boot heel, no elastomer bunched under the arch, and the velcro pulled snug but not crushing the instep. Do that check at home on a carpet, not at a dark trailhead.
Durability
Carbon steel is the right call here. It holds an edge much longer than the softer stainless used on some budget devices, and the spikes on a Hillsound stay pointed for several seasons of normal trail use. The trade is corrosion: carbon steel rusts if you throw the pair wet into a pack pocket and forget them until November. Rinse road salt off, dry them, and they last.
The failure points to watch are the harness and the velcro. The elastomer eventually goes hard and cracks — earlier if it lives in a hot car or gets stretched onto boots it was never sized for. The velcro loses grip as it packs with grit and ice; a quick brush-out keeps it working. Chain links and spike welds are rarely the thing that goes.

Who should buy it
Buy the Trail Crampon if your winter hiking includes steep, consolidated, icy trail — the classic north-east or alpine-foothill descent where the tread has been polished to glass by traffic and refreezing. Buy it if you hike with a loaded pack, since the extra weight is noise at that scale and the extra security is not. Buy it if microspikes have ever slid out from under you on a descent.
Who should not
- Casual and urban users. Sidewalks, driveways and dog walks do not need 17 mm carbon steel. Go to ice cleats for walking.
- Winter runners. Too heavy and too spiky underfoot for running cadence — a short-tip running device is the better tool.
- Weight-counting hikers on moderate trails. The lighter Trail Crampon Ultra or plain MICROspikes make more sense.

This is not a crampon. The name says crampon; the device is a trail traction system. It has no front points, no rigid frame and no boot welt to lock onto. On slopes steep enough that a slip would slide — steep snowfields, couloirs, icy scrambles, glaciers — you need real crampons, boots stiff enough to take them, an ice axe and the training to use it. FAQ
Will the Trail Crampon fit trail running shoes?
Physically yes, in the smaller sizes, but it is a poor match. The mass and spike length interfere with a running gait and the plates feel harsh through a thin midsole. Choose a running-specific device instead.
Do I need the velcro strap tight?
Snug, not crushing. It is there to stop rotation, not to hold the device on — the elastomer does that. Over-tightening on an insulated boot restricts circulation and makes cold feet worse.
Can I wear them on packed snow as well as ice?
Yes. Long spikes work well in packed snow and frozen crust. In deep unconsolidated snow no traction device helps much — that is a snowshoe problem.
How do I stop them rusting?
Rinse after exposure to road salt, dry fully at room temperature, and store them loose rather than sealed in a wet stuff sack. Surface rust on the spikes is cosmetic; rust at the chain links is worth inspecting before a season.
