Black Diamond Neve Review
The Neve is one of the oldest names still in Black Diamond's catalogue, and it has survived because it does one narrow thing well: it puts ten aluminum points under a ski boot for very little weight. On firm spring snow, on a frozen skin track, on the boot-pack up a couloir, that is exactly the right amount of crampon.
Take it onto ice or rock and the picture changes fast. Aluminum points blunt, bend and round off in a way steel does not, and this is the honest limitation that decides whether the Neve belongs in your pack or is the wrong purchase entirely.

Strap, Clip and Pro: what the names mean
Black Diamond's binding suffixes are the same across the range. Strap is a strap-on binding (C1) that works on any sufficiently stiff boot, welted or not. Clip is semi-automatic (C2) with a heel lever and a toe cradle, so a heel welt is needed. Pro is fully automatic (C3), using a wire toe bail as well as the heel lever, requiring welts at both ends.
For the Neve the practical decision is simple. Most ski boots have a pronounced heel and toe lip that accepts a full automatic binding, so ski tourers should take the Pro — it is lighter, faster to fit with cold hands, and more secure. The Strap version exists for people mixing the Neve with hiking or lightweight mountain boots that have no welts, and it pays for that flexibility with roughly 100 g and a fiddlier fitting process in the dark. On snow, where it belongs
Ski mountaineering crampons spend most of their life not being used. They ride in the pack for a whole tour and come out for one forty-minute boot-pack on a frozen morning slope. In that role, weight matters more than performance, and roughly 500 g per pair for the Pro version is the argument for the Neve in a single number.
When you do put them on, the ten-point layout is ample for what it is asked to do. On firm, wind-affected or refrozen spring snow the points bite readily — aluminum penetrates snow essentially as well as steel does, because snow is soft enough that point hardness is irrelevant. Flat-footing feels stable, the frame has enough length adjustment for the range of ski boot sole lengths, and the horizontal front points are enough for kicking steps up a moderate couloir.
The included anti-balling plates matter more here than on a technical crampon. Spring snow in the sun is exactly the condition that packs into the frame and turns a crampon into a platform sole, which on a steep couloir is a serious problem. Kick the frame with the opposite boot or tap it with an axe shaft as a habit, not as a reaction.
Point wear is the real weakness
This is the part reviews of aluminum crampons tend to skip. Aluminum points are soft. Walk fifty metres of frozen scree, cross a rock band on a ridge, or scratch across a patch of blue ice, and you can watch the tips round off within a single outing. Rounded points are not a cosmetic problem — they are what stops the crampon from biting on hard snow at exactly the moment you need it to.
You can dress the points back up with a hand file, but every session removes material from a point that was never long to begin with, and unlike steel there is not much depth to work with. A pair of Neves used mostly on snow can last many seasons; the same pair used carelessly on mixed ground can be visibly degraded in one. The discipline is simple: aluminum crampons come off before the rock, not after.
Aluminum also flexes and can deform under point loading. That is fine when the load is spread across ten points on snow, and not fine when you front-point on ice with all your weight on two. Neve vs Petzl Leopard
The Petzl Leopard is the obvious cross-shop and it undercuts the Neve substantially on weight, at around 330 g per pair, using a cord linking system in place of a rigid bar. That cord is the whole story: it lets the Leopard fold into a pocket-sized bundle, which is a genuine advantage when the crampons live in a pack for weeks, but it also makes the crampon feel less planted underfoot than the Neve's conventional bar.

If minimum weight and pack size are the priority, the Leopard wins. If you want the more solid, conventional feel and slightly better durability of a bar-linked crampon, the Neve is the better object. Who should buy it
Ski tourers and ski mountaineers who need occasional traction on firm snow and want the crampon to disappear from their pack weight. Spring couloir skiers, glacier travellers on straightforward terrain, and anyone doing summer snow slopes where the surface is snow rather than ice. Who should not buy it
Be blunt with yourself about this one, because aluminum is the most commonly mis-bought crampon material.
- Any water ice, any ice climbing. Aluminum front points will not hold on hard ice and the frame is not built for the loads. Buy steel.

- Alpine routes with rock sections. Ridge traverses and scrambles chew alloy points. This is where the extra couple of hundred grams of steel buys years of service life.
- Winter hiking on icy trails. If the terrain is low-angle and the risk is slipping rather than falling, microspikes are lighter, cheaper, more comfortable and safer than any crampon. Crampons are for terrain where a slip has consequences.
Firm spring snow at angle is unforgiving ground. Crampons of any material only work alongside an ice axe you can actually self-arrest with, and instruction in movement on steep snow. Aluminum points in particular give a false sense of security once they are blunt — inspect them before every trip, not after.

FAQ
Can I use the Neve for glacier travel?
Yes, on snow-covered glaciers where the surface is snow or soft névé. On a dry glacier with exposed blue ice, aluminum points skate and dull rapidly — that is a steel crampon day.
Neve Strap or Neve Pro?
Pro if your boots have both a toe and a heel welt, which nearly all ski boots do. It is lighter and faster to fit. Strap if you will also use them on hiking or lightweight mountain boots without welts.
How long do the aluminum points last?
It depends almost entirely on what you walk on. Kept to snow, a pair can serve for many seasons. Used across rock and hard ice, the tips can round off noticeably within a season. Take them off before rock sections rather than walking through them.
Can I sharpen aluminum crampon points?
You can dress them with a hand file along the original bevel, but the points are short and each session removes material you cannot get back. Never use a powered grinder. Retire them when the points are visibly stubby or a tip has bent.
