Petzl Leopard Review
The Leopard is a full-aluminum 10-point crampon weighing about 330 g a pair — roughly a third of a steel mountaineering crampon — that folds down small enough to disappear into a skimo pack. For firm spring snow on a ski tour, it is a remarkable piece of equipment.
It is also the crampon most likely to be bought by the wrong person. Aluminum points blunt fast, and a blunt aluminum point on hard ice does not hold. The specification that makes the Leopard brilliant on snow is exactly what makes it unsafe on ice and expensive on rock.
So this review spends as much time on where the Leopard should not go as on where it shines. If you only read one section, read the limits.

What 330 g buys you
Weight changes behaviour. A crampon at this weight and packed size gets carried on days when you are only 40 per cent sure you will need it — and those are precisely the days people get caught out. Judged as insurance you will actually take with you, the Leopard is excellent.
On the snow it is intended for — firm morning névé, refrozen spring snow, wind slab on a summit ridge — the ten points penetrate well and the platform feels stable. Aluminum sharp from the factory bites soft-to-firm snow just as well as steel does, because snow is not what dulls points or resists them.
The CORD-TEC Dyneema cord replaces the steel linking bar. It is the reason the crampon folds flat rather than staying bar-length. Length is set through the cord rather than by clicking a bar into an index hole, so plan to size it once, at home, for one specific boot and leave it. Swapping between boots of different sizes is a chore, not a two-second job.
The honest part: how fast alloy points blunt
Aluminum is roughly a third the density of steel and far softer. On snow, softness costs nothing. On anything harder, it costs a lot and quickly.
A single rocky col crossing — the kind where you walk fifty metres over exposed slabs because taking the crampons off feels like a hassle — will visibly round the front points. A season of doing that leaves you with points that no longer bite hard, refrozen afternoon snow, let alone ice. Steel points survive the same treatment with a scuff and file back to sharp; aluminum points lose material you never get back, and filing them simply removes more of what little there is.
The practical rules that follow from that are simple. Take the Leopard off before rock sections rather than walking through them. Do not use it as a mixed-ground crampon, ever. Inspect the points at the start of each season and judge them by bite, not appearance — if they skate on hard névé where they used to hold, they are done.

Where the Leopard is unsafe
Do not take a full-aluminum crampon onto hard water ice, alpine ice, or any steep firm ground where a fall would run. Alloy points skate on ice instead of penetrating, and they get worse with every rock contact. This is a safety limit, not a performance preference.
Specifically, the Leopard is the wrong crampon for waterfall ice at any angle, for steep alpine ice, for mixed climbing, for autumn or winter mountaineering on scoured névé and rock, and for any route where you would want to front-point with confidence. Ten points with no secondary points would already put a ceiling on front-pointing; aluminum lowers that ceiling to almost nothing.
It is also not a substitute for judgment on steep snow. A slip on a firm 40° slope becomes a slide within a metre, and stopping it takes an ice axe and self-arrest you have actually practised. Crampons of any material buy you traction, not consequence-free terrain. If you are not confident with an axe on the ground you are planning, that is the gap to fix first.
Bindings and fit
Petzl sells the Leopard in two versions. FL uses the Flexlock strap system: a toe cradle and heel cradle joined by webbing, fitting stiff boots without welts (C1). LLF uses Leverlock Fil — a wire toe bail with the heel lever — for boots with front and rear welts.
For ski boots, the LLF version is generally the better fit and faster to put on with gloves. For stiff mountaineering or trekking boots without welts, FL is the only option. Neither version belongs on a boot whose sole flexes when you twist it by hand; welt types and boot ratings are covered in crampon and boot compatibility.
Sizing the cord takes patience the first time. Do it in a warm room, with the exact boot you will use, and check that the crampon does not rock when twisted. Then check the front-point projection — roughly 1.5–2 cm past the toe — and leave the setting alone.
ANTISNOW plates are included. Spring snow balls up under aluminum just as readily as under steel, and a snow ball under a lightweight crampon is doubly bad, because you have fewer millimetres of point to spare. Tap the frame with your axe shaft whenever snow starts sticking.
Durability and care
Two wear items dominate: the points and the cord.
The points are consumable in the sense that once they are rounded, the crampon's useful envelope shrinks. Treat them as you would ski edges: avoid rock, and accept that a season of carelessness costs you performance. Filing is a last resort — you can restore an edge once or twice, but every pass removes material from a point that had little to give.
The cord abrades where it passes through the front and heel sections, and the most common damage comes from the crampon's own points pressing into it inside a pack. Use a crampon bag or point protectors. Petzl sells replacement cord, so a worn cord is a consumable rather than the end of the crampon. Inspect it seasonally: fuzzed sheath is fine, exposed core or a cut is not.

Who should buy the Leopard

Who should not buy it
Anyone buying their first and only crampon. The Leopard is a specialist. A first pair has to cover glaciers, snow routes and moderate ice, and that means a steel 12-point crampon, not this one.
Ski mountaineers who meet rock and hard ice. If your couloirs have exposed rock at the entry, or the snow is bulletproof rather than firm, buy the Irvis Hybrid. It weighs about 200 g more, keeps a steel front section, and removes almost every limitation described above. For most people asking about the Leopard, this is the correct answer.
Summer glacier trekkers. Moraine and rock bands eat alloy. The all-steel Irvis is the same layout in a material that survives the walk-in.

FAQ
How long do the aluminum points actually last?
On snow only, many seasons. With regular rock contact, one season is enough to noticeably round the front points, and rounded alloy points stop holding on hard refrozen snow. There is no fixed hour count — judge by bite, not by looks, and keep the crampons off rock whenever you reasonably can.
Can I sharpen the Leopard?
Once or twice, gently, with a hand file, keeping the original bevel. Aluminum points have little material to spare, so sharpening is damage control rather than maintenance. Never use a power tool.
Leopard or Irvis Hybrid?
Hybrid unless you are certain your use is snow only and every gram matters. The Hybrid's steel front section covers hard ice steps and tolerates rock, for about 200 g. Most buyers are better served by it.
Is the Leopard enough for a glacier?
For a dry-season glacier walk on snow, in a rope team, with a competent party, yes. If the route crosses moraine, bare ice or rock bands — which many glacier approaches do — take steel instead.
