Grivel G14 Review
The G14 is Grivel's answer to the modular ice crampon: fourteen points, front points that swap between mono and dual, and the same hot-forged steel the brand has used since it invented the 12-point crampon. It is not the lightest ice crampon and not the most delicately engineered. It is the one whose points are still sharp at the end of a season of dry-tooling and mixed scratching.
Buy it for waterfall ice, alpine mixed and any climbing where your points spend real time on rock. Look elsewhere if you mainly walk glaciers, or if you want the lightest possible technical crampon.

Mono or dual: the modular front end
The G14's front points bolt on. Run two of them for a dual-point configuration, or a single central point for mono. The change takes a few minutes with a small wrench at the kitchen table, not on a belay ledge, so treat it as a seasonal or per-trip decision rather than something you adjust mid-route.
Dual is the default for pure waterfall ice. Two points spread load across brittle or aerated ice, resist twisting when you stand on one foot, and forgive imprecise kicks. On long moderate pitches they are less tiring.
Mono is for mixed and steep technical ground. One point slots into a crack, stands on a small edge and pivots in a placement, which is exactly what you want when the ice is thin and the rock is doing half the work. It is also less stable on soft plastic ice, where it can sink and let the boot rotate.

Edge retention: the real reason to buy a G14
Hot forging compresses the steel while shaping it, leaving a dense, fine-grained tip. Stamped points cut from sheet steel start sharp too, but they thin and round off faster once they meet granite. On mixed ground — torquing into cracks, standing on rugose edges, scraping across slab — that difference shows up within a single season.
The practical benefit is fewer sharpening sessions and more usable point length over the crampon's life. When the tips do round, a hand file restores them quickly; forged steel takes a file cleanly. Use a file, never a bench grinder, because the heat from powered abrasives destroys the temper that makes the point worth having.
Because front points are replaceable, the G14 also survives the worst-case scenario: a bent or badly worn front point is a spare part, not a new crampon. Secondary points are part of the forged frame and wear far more slowly.
On the ice, and on the walk in
The G14 climbs like a stiff, planted crampon. Vertically oriented front points slice into cold ice rather than displacing a dinner-plate, secondary points bite as the boot settles, and the rigid frame transmits every bit of a marginal placement to your foot without flexing. On steep terrain that stiffness is confidence.
On the approach it is less charming. Fourteen points and a rigid frame walk like what they are: a specialist tool. It flat-foots adequately on firm snow and glacier, but on long low-angle approaches you will feel the ~1060 g per pair and the front points will catch on anything that catches. This is normal for the category, not a fault, but it is why we do not recommend the G14 as a one-crampon quiver for someone who mostly walks.
Binding versions are New-Matic (semi-automatic, C2, heel welt required) and Cramp-O-Matic (fully automatic, C3, toe and heel welts required). There is no strap-on version, and there should not be — a strap-on binding on a technical crampon flexes exactly when you need precision. Most ice climbers should be on Cramp-O-Matic with B3 boots. Antibott plates are included and should stay on. Approaches to ice routes in spring are the exact conditions where a boot silently balls up with wet snow, and the transition from packed snow to the first ice moves is a bad place to discover it.

Who should not buy it

Modular ice crampons imply terrain with real consequence. Vertical ice requires competent tool and screw placement, belay skills and instruction — the crampon is the least important part of that system. Nothing on your feet compensates for a bad anchor or a bad decision about conditions.

Will the G14 fit B2 boots?

Is the G14 usable for general mountaineering?
