Mono vs Dual Point Crampons

Every climber buying a technical crampon runs into the same fork: one front point or two. The marketing suggests mono-points are the advanced choice, and plenty of people buy them for that reason and then spend a season fighting their feet on long, cold pitches of plastic ice.

The real difference is narrow and mechanical. A mono-point concentrates everything on one placement and rewards precision. A dual point spreads load and resists rotation, so it forgives sloppy feet and tired calves. Which one suits you depends far more on what you climb and how often than on how well you climb.

What actually changes underfoot

Stand on a front point and two forces act on it: your body weight pressing down, and a twisting force about the vertical axis every time you shift your hips, reach sideways or traverse.

A single point handles the downward load beautifully. All of your weight is driven through one narrow tip, so penetration per kick is high and the ice it displaces on entry is minimal — which is exactly why monos fracture brittle ice less than a pair of points punching in side by side.

The twisting force is where the mono struggles. One point is a pivot. Nothing but the stiffness of the steel and whatever your secondary points happen to be touching stops your boot rotating around it. Two points set roughly 25–35 mm apart form a base: any rotation has to lift one of them, so the placement stays where you put it while you move your body around it. That single fact explains almost every difference climbers report.

Where a mono-point wins

Thin ice and mixed ground. When the ice is a centimeter thick over rock, a mono finds the one divot, seam or frozen turf pocket that will hold. A dual point straddling the same feature bridges it and skates.

Reusing pick holes. On steep, hard ice climbers routinely place a foot into the hole a tool has just come out of. That hole is one point wide. A mono drops in and locks; a dual point sits either side of it on the fractured margin.

Rock edges and torquing. On a small rock edge, in a crack, or when stein-pulling on a mixed pitch, one point is all that fits. Dry-tooling has driven mono geometry hard for that reason.

Brittle winter ice. Cold, glassy ice fractures in plates. Less displaced ice per kick means fewer plates falling off with your foot attached to them.

Where a dual point wins

Plastic ice and long pitches. Warm, ductile ice takes both points easily, and once they are in, the boot does not rotate at all. Over a 50-meter pitch that stability translates directly into calf endurance, because you are not making constant micro-corrections to keep your foot square.

Aerated, rotten or snowy ice. Poor ice shears. Two points spread the load across a wider footprint and are much less likely to cut through than one.

Snow, névé and alpine approaches. A mono sinks into firm snow and finds nothing. Dual points still let you kick something like a step. If your ice climbing arrives at the end of a snow slope, this matters.

Learning. Dual points forgive imprecise kicks and let you recover from a placement that was not quite right. Monos punish the same mistake by rotating you off the wall.

What modular crampons let you do

Modular technical crampons — the Petzl Lynx, Grivel G14 and BD Cyborg among them — bolt their front points on rather than forging them into the frame. That gives you three adjustments, not one:

  • Mono or dual, by swapping the point assembly with the supplied hardware, usually in a few minutes on the kitchen table.
  • Projection, by moving the points forward or back a notch — shorter for mixed and thin ice, longer for deep, soft ice.
  • Replacement when the tips are eventually filed away, which on a fixed-point crampon means a new crampon.

The costs are honest: a few extra grams, a small amount of hardware to inspect, and bolts that need checking with a wrench before every trip. Loctite or the manufacturer's threadlocker is not optional on modular points.

Modularity only pays if you actually swap. Plenty of Lynx and G14 owners run dual all season and never open the box of spare parts — and that is a fine outcome, because they still own a crampon that can change when their climbing does.

Fixed mono-points

Dedicated fixed monos like the Petzl Dart exist because removing the modularity saves weight and removes hardware that can loosen. They are a specialist's tool, bought by climbers who already know that mono is what they want, for steep ice and hard mixed. As a first technical crampon they are a narrow choice.

Which should you buy? A checklist

Count the statements that are true for you.

  • Most of my ice is grade 3–4 water ice, often in the cold, sometimes thin
  • I climb mixed routes, or I dry-tool
  • I regularly place my feet in pick holes and want them to lock in
  • My footwork is deliberate and I rarely make a second kick

Three or four true: run mono, and buy modular so you keep the option to go back. One or two: run dual. Zero: definitely dual.

The honest default is dual. Most climbers, including many who lead solid ice, are better served by two points on long routes, cold days and mediocre ice. Start dual, climb a season, and switch when you find yourself wanting a placement that a dual point cannot make — not before.

Getting the geometry right

Whichever you run, projection and sharpness matter more than the count. Front points should stand ~20–30 mm proud of the boot for ice; shorter suits mixed. Front-pointing puts you on terrain where a fall is not survivable without a rope and competent belays. Technical crampons do not make steep ice safer; instruction, screws you can place quickly and honest condition assessment do.

FAQ

Do mono-points wear out faster?

Yes, in the sense that one point is taking the load and abrasion that two used to share, and mixed climbers put monos into rock constantly. Expect to file more often and to replace modular points periodically. That replaceability is a good argument for modular over fixed if you climb a lot of mixed.

Can I climb snow and alpine routes on a mono?

You can, and alpinists do it on mixed faces, but it is the mono's weakest ground. If a route is mostly snow and névé with short ice steps, dual points — or a general mountaineering crampon — will be quicker and less tiring.

Are two front points on one side ever better than a mono for competition mixed?

No. Competition and modern hard mixed are almost entirely mono territory, because placements are single edges, bolt holes and small pockets. That is the clearest case where the mono is not a preference but a requirement.

Do I need different boots for mono-points?

Not different, but stiffer helps. A rigid B3 boot with an automatic binding transmits force to a single point without flex, which is what makes a mono feel solid. Soft boots amplify every bit of rotation the mono already allows.
