Petzl Sarken Review
The Sarken is what the Vasak becomes when you decide ice matters. Same family, same hardware, same tool-free adjustment — but the front points are T-section rather than flat horizontal, and that single change moves the crampon's ceiling from short ice steps to sustained alpine ice around 70°. It weighs ~960 g a pair and comes only in lever bindings, so it needs a boot with at least a heel welt.
Buy it if your routes are north faces, steep couloirs, mixed alpine ground and long snow approaches to real ice. Skip it if your winters are glaciers and ridges — you would be paying a premium and carrying ~80 g extra for capability you will not use.

What T-section front points actually do
A flat horizontal front point is wide in the plane it displaces ice — it pushes a lot of material aside on each kick, which makes it stable in soft snow and slow in hard ice. A vertical point is the opposite: it slices in with little effort, and it can feel twitchy underfoot because there is less lateral surface holding the foot from rolling.
The Sarken's T-section is the compromise, and it is a good one. In profile the point is tall enough to penetrate hard ice with one kick instead of three, while the horizontal flange gives lateral support so the boot does not rotate when you stand up on it. The practical result: on 50–60° alpine ice you kick once, feel the point set, and move. On the same ground the Vasak asks for a second kick and rewards you with a shallower placement.
The trade appears in deep unconsolidated snow, where the narrower profile knifes in rather than forming a shelf. That matters less than it sounds — in that snow you are wallowing regardless — but it is the reason we do not call the Sarken a straight upgrade.
How it walks
This is the Sarken's real argument. Technical crampons usually punish you on the approach: aggressive points catch, rigid frames transmit every irregularity, and the front points sit so proud that flat-footing feels like standing on a diving board. The Sarken behaves like a walking crampon. The frame has enough torsional give to follow a B2 boot's small flex, the ten downward points land in a conventional pattern, and the front points do not lever the sole off the snow when you plant the whole foot.
On a long glacier approach you would struggle to tell it from a Vasak, which is the whole point of owning one crampon that does both jobs. Where you notice the difference is on rocky ground: the T-section points are more exposed and will skate on slabby rock, so the same care you would give any technical crampon applies.
Ice above roughly 45° is roped terrain for most people. A crampon that bites better does not make a fall survivable — that depends on your protection, your belay, your axe technique and your partner. Take a course before committing to steep alpine ice.
Bindings, fit and boot requirements
The Sarken skips the strap-on option entirely. Petzl offers it with the Leverlock Universel toe — which accepts both a flexible cradle and a wire bail, covering C2 and C3 boots from one purchase — and in a full automatic Leverlock Fil version with a front bail for B3 boots only. If you own or expect to own more than one pair of boots, Universel is the safer buy.
A heel welt is not optional. The lever needs a defined ledge to seat against; on a boot without one it can be pulled off under load, which is the kind of failure that happens exactly when you cannot afford it. If your boots have no welts, the Sarken is not your crampon — go back to a strap-on model from the mountaineering roundup, and read binding types explained before ordering.
Set the linking bar so there is no fore-aft slop, aim for around 2 cm of front-point projection, and re-check the heel lever tension after the first day — a new boot rand compresses slightly and levers loosen.
Snow shedding, durability and upkeep
ANTISNOW plates are fitted front and rear and work as well here as anywhere in the Petzl line, which matters more on technical ground than on flat glaciers: a ball of wet snow under the forefoot lifts the front points out of contact just as you commit to a steep step. Tap the frame with the axe shaft every few minutes when snow is sticky, and replace plates that have cracked.
Point wear follows use. Mixed ground with any rock in it dulls T-section points faster than horizontal ones because more of the point's tip is doing the work, and mono-style sharpening rules apply — hand file only, follow the original bevels, and keep the flange edges square rather than rounding them. A bench grinder will draw the temper out of the steel and the point never holds an edge properly afterwards.

Who should buy the Sarken
Buy it if steep ice is a recurring feature of your season rather than an occasional surprise: alpine north faces, steep couloirs, Scottish winter gullies, mixed ground where you need a point that sets first time. Buy it if you already own B2 or B3 boots and want one crampon that handles both the approach and the crux without a compromise you notice in either direction.
Who should not buy it

FAQ
Is the Sarken worth the premium over the Vasak?
Only if you climb ice steeper than about 55° with any regularity. Below that the Vasak does the same job for less money and less weight. Above it, the Sarken saves real energy on every placement.
Can the Sarken be converted to a mono-point?
No. The front points are fixed dual T-sections. If you want mono/dual modularity, that is the Lynx.
Will it fit B1 hiking-style boots?
No. Every Sarken version uses a heel lever, which needs a proper heel welt. Boots without one need a strap-on crampon.
How steep can you really climb on it?
Roughly 70° alpine ice is a fair working ceiling, and short vertical steps are manageable. Sustained vertical is possible but tiring compared with a dedicated ice crampon.
