The Irvis is Petzl's light steel 10-point: roughly 720 g a pair, full steel construction, and a deliberately unambitious point layout aimed at glacier travel, snow slopes and easy alpine ground. It is the crampon for people who walk in crampons far more often than they climb in them.

What you buy is steel security at close to hybrid weight. What you give up is the pair of secondary points that a 12-point crampon uses to support front-pointing, which sets a clear ceiling on how steep the Irvis should take you.

What 10 points actually costs you

A 12-point crampon has two front points plus two secondary points angled forward under the toe. A 10-point crampon has the front pair and nothing behind them until the main downward points under the ball of the foot. On flat ground and moderate slopes you will not notice the difference at all — the ten downward points sit in the same broad pattern and the crampon walks beautifully.

You notice it the moment you front-point. Without secondary points, the boot pivots down onto nothing, so your ankle and calf carry the whole load and the placement feels less settled. On a two-metre bulge of firm snow that is a non-event. On a 50° ice step it is genuinely tiring and less secure, and it is why we treat the Irvis as a walking crampon that can handle short steep sections rather than a climbing crampon that also walks.

The front points themselves are horizontal and moderately aggressive — enough to kick a step in névé and to bite a frozen turf ledge, not enough to encourage anyone to lead ice on them. That framing matches how Petzl positions the crampon, and it is the honest way to shop for one.

On glacier and snow

Glacier travel is where the Irvis earns its place. Long approaches on hard morning snow, crevasse fields where you shuffle and turn a lot, moraine crossings where you would rather not chew up expensive points — the Irvis handles all of it and you feel the weight saving over a 12-point steel crampon at the end of a long day.

The downward points are long enough to give real purchase on refrozen snow, and because the crampon is steel, they keep that bite after contact with rock. That is the whole argument for the Irvis over an aluminum crampon: alloy points round off on the first rocky section and stop biting firm ice, while steel shrugs it off. ANTISNOW plates come pre-fitted front and rear. They matter more on a glacier crampon than on an ice crampon, because the conditions that ball up snow — warm afternoon, wet spring snowpack — are exactly the conditions of a descent off a glaciated peak. A ball of snow under a crampon turns a set of points into a slick platform without warning. Tap the frame with your axe shaft every few steps when snow is sticking, and replace plates when they crack.

A light crampon does not lighten the consequences. Roped glacier travel needs crevasse-rescue skill; steep snow needs an ice axe and practised self-arrest. Above roughly 30° a slip becomes a slide, and no crampon stops that on its own. Get instruction before you rely on either.

Bindings and fit

Two versions, and the choice matters more than the model choice.

Flexlock is the strap-on (C1) version. A toe cradle and heel cradle joined by webbing, it fits stiff-soled boots with no welts, which covers most B1 mountaineering boots and a small number of genuinely rigid trekking boots. If your boot's sole flexes noticeably when you twist it by hand, it does not take a crampon of any kind.

Leverlock Universel is the lever version. The heel lever needs a heel welt, and the toe comes with a flexible cradle plus the option of a wire bail, so one purchase covers both C2 and C3 fitting. Adjustment is the standard Petzl steel flex bar: press the clip, slide, index into a hole. Set it so the crampon sits without rocking when you twist the boot, with the front points protruding roughly 1.5–2 cm past the toe welt. A long bar is available for larger boots.

Buy the plain Irvis if the crampon spends a lot of time on your feet, if there is rock and moraine in the day, if you want a strap-on version for boots without a heel welt, or if you would rather not think about a cord as a wear item. Durability and living with it

There is very little to go wrong. Steel frame, steel bar, no modular front-point hardware, no cord. The points are not hot-forged, so a season of moraine will visibly round them, but they also file back to sharp in minutes with a hand file. Never take a bench grinder to crampon points — the heat softens the steel permanently.

The parts that actually need replacing over the years are straps, anti-balling plates and the toe cradle or bail. Rinse off salt and grit, dry before storage, and check the bar clip and every rivet at the start of the season. That is the whole routine.

Who should not buy it

Anyone who will front-point regularly. If your objectives include steep snow gullies, alpine ice or anything you would call climbing rather than walking, the missing secondary points will bother you within a season. Gram-counting ski tourers. If the crampon lives in your pack for six hours and comes out for one booter, 180 g and half the packed volume are worth real money. Buy the Hybrid.

Ice climbers. Nothing about this crampon suits vertical ice. Ten points and no secondaries is the wrong tool, not just a slower one.

Winter trail hikers. If your season is frozen trail, packed snow and the occasional icy traverse in flexible boots, a 10-point crampon is both overkill and a trip hazard. Microspikes are the right tool, and the line between the two is a safety decision, not a budget one.

FAQ

Is the Irvis enough for Mont Blanc or a similar snow route?

For the walking and snow-slope sections, yes — this is exactly the terrain it is built for, and plenty of guided parties use 10-point crampons on that ground. If your route includes a sustained steep ice section, take a 12-point crampon instead. The crampon is the smallest part of the decision; fitness, conditions and instruction matter more.

Can I use the Irvis with ski boots?

The Leverlock Universel version fits most ski touring boots that have a compatible heel and toe shape, but check the fit at home rather than on a col. For ski use specifically, the Hybrid is the better-matched crampon on weight and packed size.

How much steeper can I go than on the Hybrid?

They perform the same on steep ground, because the front sections are identical. The difference is durability and packability behind the toe, not bite.

Do the points need sharpening out of the box?

No. Sharpen when the points stop biting firm ice, typically after several rocky approaches. Use a hand file, keep the original bevel, and stop before you see any blue discolouration.
